Common Introduction

This course of studies addresses a new interdisciplinary focus. For the first time, Communications Studies and Technologies bring together the best of both the Human/Social Sciences approaches and Technological perspectives that pervasively drive the pace of change in our days. The market for such competencies is already undergoing a rapid expansion as the society and economy of this country are moving towards Western European benchmarks.
Communication Sciences and Technologies is designed to address a basket of broad graduate profiles. There profiles meet current and future job market shortages in distinct areas of corporate development, particularly in the fields of media - old and new – digital and interactive communication, Internet companies, ISP related content and services, digital content packaging, portal development, journalism, multimedia technologies and projects, IT applications to new business, network value chains, e-commerce, interactive marketing, traditional and on-line advertising, CRM, integrated ASP to content industry, knowledge-based industries, and converging real and e-business at large.

The two main professional profiles embodied in prospective graduates are detailed as below:

  • Communication Sciences (Media and Communication) - The Communication Science direction will cover media, communication and journalism. Thus it will provide students with the necessary knowledge and experience to pursue carriers in the media and communication industry. It will also cover approaches and methods of writing and techniques of analysis as well as approaches to methods of broadcasting and online techniques.

The major will entail journalism, writing and editing (reporting and news writing), press and society (journalism and society), media studies, media research, media and content industry (media economies), new media, broadcast media, media and communication ethics, media law and regulation, public affairs reporting, editing and production, television journalism, radio journalism, public relations, communication theory and organisational communication.

Students completing the Communication Science direction will also have to undertake a professional placement course. Students may have the opportunity to undergo professional placements in media and/or communication work places in Macedonia and/or abroad. The CST Faculty is working in collaboration with a number of organisations, institutions and universities in Albania, France, Kosovo, Holland, Denmark, USA, etc.

  • Communication Technologies (Computer Sciences) – The curriculum of Communication Technologies is based on the observation that in the field of computer science, specific areas such as Computer Networking, Database Systems, Client Server Programming and E Commerce have a great potential for economic development and job opportunities in Macedonia.

The overall course requirement for the current curriculum primarily comes from four areas: Communications, Computer Science, Analytical Skills (Mathematics), and General Education such as from Languages, Ethics, and IT/Law.

The Computer Science Curriculum emphasises the basic principles of computing and information processing, which include the creation, representation, storage, transformation, and transmission of information. Students completing the computer science curriculum will have acquired a fundamental understanding of computing, all aspects of computer networking, database management systems, client server applications specifically geared to e commerce, and information communication.

The graduates serve in a variety of programming, software engineering, database administration, network design and administration, and e commerce management.

SEE University currently has excellent IT infrastructure for delivering the proposed Computer Science curriculum as for example a Computer Networking Laboratory. This laboratory will provide students with hands on experience in setting up computer networks, network management, client server application development, etc.

The curriculum layout aims at a balanced combination of foundation knowledge and broad professional skills. The first year will be beneficial to students in both fields since it brings together a vast range of interdisciplinary courses which will accommodate them with grasp knowledge of both fields. This will add to their professional competencies.

The Faculty of Communication Sciences and Technologies offers students a balance of theoretical and practical classes. Students of both profiles are required to complete a major practical project. Following are the specifics of the respective profile projects:

• Within the Communication Sciences profile, students are required to complete a media or communication related project. In this subject students will develop a project proposal, budget and production schedule and will work in self-managing project teams. The subject will cover concept development, program research, funding development, budgeting and marketing.

• Within the Communication Technologies profile, students will work in teams, advised by Professors and business/industry specialists, to solve real world computing problems. This experience will cultivate technical expertise, utilisation of analytical thinking, quantitative reasoning, project management skills, and communication skills. Presentation of the final product and a final report is expected at the conclusion of this course.

The curriculum consists of professional workshops and professional development courses. Theoretical and practical classes held by international lecturers and professors will continue to operate within the Faculty. Guest speakers, lecturers and professors will regularly hold interactive lectures and seminars with students.

Credit and Degrees

The University offers a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Sciences and a Bachelor of Sciences in Communication Technologies (and Computer Sciences) and may offer a Masters degree.
