Study Programs
The University includes provisions for a secondary-school teacher training program and for professional and continuing teacher training. The training program comprises pedagogical methodology and liberal arts subject training.
Combining pedagogic training and up-to-date knowledge in the liberal arts subjects, the purpose of the teacher-training program is to respond to the need of ensuring an adequate supply of professionally well prepared teachers, whether prospective or currently in service.
Within this central objective, however, it is important to recognize that not all prospective teacher candidates will find actual teaching positions upon graduation. Many will be obliged, therefore, to seek employment in other market sectors. Similarly, a teaching career is often the gateway to other job opportunities, particularly in the public service and/or the service sector. Combining a strong foundation in basic skills and knowledge with a pronounced orientation toward broader applications, the program provides teachers with not only the skills necessary to imparting their knowledge, but also to adapting it to the wider work place.
In this way, the program achieves two objectives. Graduates will be well-qualified to teach as well as to apply their knowledge and skills to other professional pursuits. Simultaneously, they will be equipped to share these same skills with their students and thereby to better prepare them for the ever-changing market place.
The program will be implemented under the aegis of a single faculty of Pedagogy within the SEE University. It will consist of three inter-related components:
• Pedagogic Methodology
• Liberal Art Subject Training
• Professional and Continuing Training of Teachers
The first two will run concurrently as a four-year course of studies leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree. The third will consist of a more autonomous set of activities, though organized within the same faculty. The two semesters of the Pedagogic Methodology set of activities will consist of courses on general pedagogy, psychology, didactics, and research methodology, which will be available to all students. The remainder of the program will concentrate on teaching methodology concerning the specific subjects (majors) chosen by individual students.
