2ND CYCLE PROGRAM IN COMMUNICATION SCIENCES AT THE FACULTY FOR COMMUNICATION SCIENCES AND TECHNOLOGIES (CST)

              
The Faculty of Communication Sciences and Technologies is offering a 2nd  cycle degree course of study leading to a Masters Degree in Communications. 2nd cycle studies in the faculty will be divided into two areas of concentration, to be chosen by the student, and each with its specific course of study. These concentrations are: 1) Corporate Communications and 2) Media Strategy.

 

  •   GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE GRADUATE OF THE PROGRAM

      The 2nd Cycle Program in Communication Sciences at the CST Faculty addresses the skills to be learned, the knowledge to be acquired, and the competences to be achieved in the field of Communication .Globally, communication related employment is growing and is expected to do so well into the future. SEEU can position itself as the premier producer of people with a Communication Science education in the South East European region, through the following degree programs. The program will incorporate and build both vocational and academic competencies with possibility to emphasize one of them by allowing the student to choose his programs and courses.

 

II. LEARNING OUTCOMES

 

The skills to be earned through all programs include behavioral (intellectual and  transferable) and technical (practical and knowledge-understanding).According to the chosen degree program, the learning outcomes and employment possibility are as follows.

 

Corporate Communication.

      The graduate will be able to:

  1. Design communication systems
  2. Design training and other interventions
  3. Deliver effective training
  4. Asses communication training & systems
  5. Strategic planning

Students who obtain this degree with these competencies would be expected to be employed in one of the following areas:

  1. Human resources (Human Resource offices exist/should exist in every public and private organization)
  1. Training and development (part of HR, western organizations invest a substational amount of money in training & development, globally it’s $ 100 billion business, areas of training include: negotiation, conflict management, Intercultural communication, team work and collaborative decision making, interviewing, leadership, etc)
  1. Consultancies (firms such as Ernst & Young, Price, Waterhouse, Coopers already exist in the region and likely to grow and assist businesses to become more competitive in local and global markets)
  1. Management (in the US and western European countries students with this degree are hired to be managers in retail operations and organizations that engage in project management)
  1. Customer service operations (many firms such as financial services, have large customer service operations where employees are in particular need of
    interpersonal communication skills)

Media Strategy

       The graduate will be able to:

  • Design effective media messages in multiple mediums (audio, video, web)
  • Design media campaigns
  • Direct the execution of media campaign
  • Evaluate results
  • Do pre and post campaign assessment

Students who obtain this degree with these competencies would be expected to be employed in one of the following areas:

  • Public Relations (PR strategies are utilized globally by businesses, NGOs, government both in house and through consultancies)
  • Advertising (Advertising is also utilized by businesses, NGOs and government)
  • Political  Campaigns (in democracies everywhere both campaign annalists and speech writers are engaged by candidates in election campaigns)
  • Public Service Campaigns (governments & NGOs engage in a variety of the campaigns for the public good, such as cancer prevention and treatment, age
    prevention, immunization)

III.PROGRAM AND CURRICULLUM DESCRIPTION
        
The 2nd Cycle Program in Communications will be composed of 90 ECST credits and be taught full-time over the course of three semesters (30 credits each).The program is composed of core courses, elective courses, special studies (practical or research activities), and thesis work. The student himself designs his own individual program in the one of the two mentioned profiles, through a selection of elective courses and thesis subject i.e. thesis advisor, mentor.

The 2nd Cycle Degree in Corporate Communication has the following curriculum.

COURSE DESDCRIPTIONS

       Advanced Communication Theory
       Students explore how scholars from various traditions theorize about the universal
       human experience of communication and understanding of variety of
       communication theories as well as events in more flexible, useful and discerning way.

       Research Methodology
       Students develop an understanding of the research methods utilized in the study of
       communication. Further, they will develop the ability to conduct research in
       organizational settings, including the methods of presenting research results.

        Advanced Organizational Communication
        This course emphasizes the study, analysis and application of theory along with
        current research related to organizational communication. Of particular concern is   
        the assessment of organizational functioning in light of current research.

        Communication and Conflict Management in Organizations
        This course focuses on conflict processes in organizations and the use if mediation,
        negotiation and other intervention strategies to manage conflict in productive ways.

        Groups and Organizations
        This course focuses on the role and function of both informal and formal group
        communication in organizational processes. A particular focus is on teamwork and     
        collaborative decision-making.

        Communication Training in Organizations
        The application, research, and theory pertinent to communication in business and the
        professions, with an emphasis on the development training programs developing
        effective communication skills in business and the professions.

        Communication Consulting
         This course focuses on the role and obligations of the communication consultant. In
         particular, there is an emphasis on process of consulting, consultation models,
         interpersonal and team decision-making skills, practical communication analysis,
         problem diagnosis, intervention strategies, client approach alternatives, and
         implementation strategies.

         Organizational Communication System
         This course focuses on the communication structure of an organization and its 
         impact on organizational performance. Of particular concern will be the
         development of strategies to adjust structure for improved organizational
         functioning.

         Advanced Interviewing
         This course focuses on the principles and types of interviews, with application of the
         principles in informational, employment, appraisal, and counseling interviews.
         Resumes, placement papers, job applications, interviews, and follow-ups are also
         examined.

         Media Strategies
         Contemporary communicators in need of mediums such as face-to-face interaction
         require an expanded knowledge. This course will have a special focus on the
         effective persuasion.

         Media Criticism
         A course organized primarily around theories and criticism considered within the
         broad category of  Contemporaneous theoretical texts to introduce students to a 
        variety of analyzing media messages, and emphasizes the application of frameworks
        on the analysis of specific media texts.

         Advanced Persuasion
         Current theories, research and practice in persuasion and social influence are
         examined along with critical variables affecting implementation of persuasive
         principles and strategies.

         Advanced Public Communication
         This course focuses on critical analysis of rhetorical strategies used by professionals
         and organized in public discourse.      

          International Media
          This course engages in comparative analysis of media system and their impact on
          the conduct of media campaigns.

          Computer Mediated Communication
          An overview of practical and scholarly approaches to computer mediated
          communication. The impact of both synchronous and asynchronous forms of
          interaction on personal and professional relationship is studied, along with ethics 
          and organizational function.    

          Internship
          Students engaged in a graduate internship are expected to participate and/or 
          conduct a significant project within an organization.

          Independent Study
          This provides an opportunity to work with a professor on a research project or to
          explore a critical area of communication in depth.

        
IV. Admission Requirements

In addition to general SEEU 2nd cycle program requirements, the perspective student        must have:

  • 1st cycle (Bachelor Degree) in Communication or related fields (students with degrees in other disciplines may be required to take undergraduate prerequisites as part of their program)
  • Excellent English proficiency (TOEFL 550;IELTS 6.0)
  • Undergraduate GPA greater than 8.5
  • Approval from the Admission committee (Students with degrees in other disciplines may be required to take undergraduate prerequisites as part of their
    program).
